The war had already been long raging when Kokoro returned to the village. Having been welcomed back thanks to the kindness of the Kazekage (and in spite of the uncertainty of the council), the young shinobi had worked his way through the ranks, and by the tender age of 16 had already been accepted into the ranks of Suna's special forces ANBU. The first time that he met his captain, a respected ninja by the name of Nakashimu Oraga, was something he could never forget. A man who would not only become a dear friend of his, and teach him a number of things, but whom would inevitably split away from him in the shadow of jealousy and animosity...
But back then, during those humble beginnings, he was a man that Kokoro looked up to as much as anyone he had ever met; even his dearest brother. During those days when the peak of the war had yet to shake away the remaining remnants of his innocence.
It was a sweltering day like any other in the deserts of Suna, a distance away from the village, in the wild lands of the Wind Nation's outer reaches, where they had been tasked as a backup force to supplement the village's rear guard. Largely a stationary mission, allowing them some rest and the means for training exercises. Something they sorely needed with the onslaught of battles and the number of new recruits they had endured. Kokoro himself had only returned that morning from a mission before being assigned to his post with the ANBU team, after all.
Their first chance of truly sitting down to get to know each other, thanks to their pairing on camp guard duty that evening, got off to a rather bumpy start; with young Kokoro sitting by his lonesome at his campfire, and his captain and partner noticeably late for duty. The older ninja that Kokoro had relieved had promised the young shinobi that he would send the captain his way once he had fished him out of the women's tent area, where he was most certainly being...distracted.

and Distracted he was, he finally made his appearance face drenched in Sweat and pleasure. He had this weird quirk of walking around shirtless that most of the others didn't question after a while, he hardly needed it unless he was in battle, considering What he did in his downtime was no secret and most just learned to accept that if he wasn't in battle, he would be busy. It wasn't that he was a promiscuous, he just knew had his priorities in order, or at least that is what he liked to think. He caught a glimpse of the new recruit and spoke to one of his men for a second before walking over towards him.
"Sup kid, names Oraga and you are? He said sticking his hand out, as a friendly gesture

Kokoro hopped up, all grins and energy in his youthful face, made girlish with his pigtailed hair and thick eyeliner. He took the man's hand, shaking it happily. "Kokoro. It's nice to have a real chance to meet you, Oraga-tan. Gaara-niisan told me a lot about you."
Mostly about his talents in battle, as compared to his vices anyway. The young boy, for the most part, was blissfully unaware of how the man spent his free time. Honestly he had chalked up his lateness to official business, or the simple fact that he had the rank and authority to come and go as he pleased.

"Kokoro Huh? thats right, your the puppet kid, well its nice ta meet ya, I heard good things about ya kid, heard you really get it done in battle. "
Oraga grinned, It was true he had heard a lot about this kid from Gaara, Hopefully the kid didn't disappoint, i mean looking at him it was tough to say if he really had what it took to be apart of ANBU, especially during this time. But He was never one to judge based on appearances and figured it would best to let the kid prove himself where it counts on the battlefield

The young man smiled warmly, hobbling back to his seat and plopping down. "I do my best, but I can hardly take all the credit." After all, he had the combined experience of his whole family with him; and their input was very real to him, as much as it might seem peculiar to those who see them only as puppets and tools.
"So...how much longer do you think this war will drag on, Oraga-tan?"

Oraga grinned back at the boy, cracking open a bottle of water and chugging it down, random sexing can really take it out of a man, and even he need to replenish his strength every now and again. The boys question was a normal one, but he had never heard it from such a young boy, it seemed to throw him off, even if it was just slightly
"Thats a tough one kid, depends on two very important thing, 1. How long we can keep killing them, and 2. How long they wanna keep dying." He began laughing, all those his joke was quite black in nature, his voice was very charming and comfortable, almost like he wasn't talking about war, but more like a game of hopscotch
"But seriously, we might be fighting for a while kid. I figured at that we would be in and out once we proved our point, but now i am not even sure i remember what that point was, not sure any of us do to be honest. Alls we know is that if we don't fight they are gonna keeping on taking, till there aint nothing left to take. Now we aint got much, but i say its worth fighting for, dont ya think so kid?" He said looking at Kokoro and smiling

The young boy smiled warmly, his glittering sand colored eyes practically awe filled. Fighting to protect their home, and all that jazz. Who could say no to a speech like that.
"Of course. Its our home so...we have to take care of it, no matter what." He responded with a vigorous nod. Admittedly, he looked far too adorable to be out in the fields, fighting a war, but one shouldn't judge a book by its cover.
"Harsh desert sands that scorch in glimmering sunlight. Our hot, humble home."

Oraga looked at the young man, there was only a 5 year age gap between them, but it was obvious that this was not the place for Kokoro, the boy was wide eyed and poetic hardly the type to become a soldier. He stood and wondered what would possess a kid so young to basically throw his life away to fight in another mans war. Lord knows the things he had seen since the war started were things no man should ever see, let alone take part in.
"Tell me something kid, the hell are you doing out here"
He said before taking a huge bite out of an apple he had picked up, chewing with his mouth open he awaited the boys response

Kokoro paused for a moment, scratching his temple idly with his sand colored eyes cast upward in thought. He'd never given it a lot of thought in particular but, circumstance had simply seemed to lead to this day and place, as though he were walking down a path predetermined for him.
"I had nowhere else to go but back to the village...and Kazekage-sama took me without a second thought. Protecting that place, and the people who protected me simply seemed like the thing to do."
There really was no thought provoking wisdom to his situation, but simply the return of an act of kindness. War hardened or not, it seemed a positive trait to have.

Oraga erupted into laughter, almost choking on his apple chunks. "Your funny kid, ya know that? your eyes are full of rainbows and lollipops, and your heart is full of kindness and good intentions. Thats rare nowadays, especially in times like these. You just remind me of those fluffy stuffed bears they sell in the markets."
He reached down grabbed his Anbu mask, and began to put his armor back on. After readjusting his sword, he looked towards Kokoro. Then remembered hearing that the Kazekage had taken the boy in, after what he called some ugly business. There was more to this kid than strung out poetry and childish naivete. Maybe if he spent some one on one time with the kid he would figure out what was really going on in that uniquely styled head
"Well I am gonna get a little training in, before it gets to late.... you wanna come with, fluffy?" He asked as he began his trek outwards

"Training? Sure!" He chirped quickly, hobbling up to his feet to follow after. It'd be so quiet lately, he hadn't done much but sit around, be it on guard duty, or in his own tent. Typically one might have been thankful for that sort of lull in war, but he couldn't help but think that they should continue fighting until it was all over. There was too much drama involved in taking an intermission.
He gathered his own gear into his satchel, taking up his own Anbu mask as well.
