It's been only a year since the last battle of the Fourth Great Shinobi War, the last battle in which any of that generation of ninja have been seen....
Seven years have passed since Pein's invasion of Konoha, and much has changed amongst the hidden villages of ninja. So may were claimed in the war that Akatsuki managed to start through the capture of the jinchuuriki, the key to that weapon of massive destruction... It was that one thing that claimed so many of our ninja, that one thing that wiped out an entire generation... The villages banded together in order to seal it away from the world forever in some secret place far from anyone's grasp. The "keys" of this weapon have vanished without a trace and are presumed gone from this world for the rest of time...
Since then, there' been peace....
But even in peace, several of the hidden villages have been cast into turmoil. The loss of their strongest ninja not only affected them personally, but financially as well. The village's economies are barely able to sustain themselves as shey try to rebuild their walls and collect their bodies, and the world outside is starting to question if they really need ninjas anymore. Depite this, shinobi press on, passing their knowledge and skills on to the new generation of ninja--those who grew up through the war. Hopefully, the hope that they will never have to see something so scarring again will be fulfilled...
No one's that lucky.
Unbeknownst to everyone, something sinister is brewing away from the sight of everyone. Amegakure--a village that had all but disappeared from the map upon the war's closure--has become a hub for a group under an all-too-familiar name. Akatsuki no Kazuki, "the red dawn of a new generation". No one knows much of them, other than the fact that they're rooted in the ashes of the fallen organization, bearing over the now-trapped Rain Village, and that whatever it is they want, it can't be good for the rest of the villages.
War seems to be on the horizon once more....

Though the Great War has ended, alliances between villages are still shaky; there's been secret power struggles between the hidden villages, each trying to survive and prove themselves better than the other. When Genkugutsu no Kokoro, current Kazekage of Sunagakure, comes to Konoha for the first diplomatic meeting with the Hokage Ayako Kazuke, he explains Suna's falling position and struggle to survive. Kirigakure has become a threat to his village, and with only Konoha between them, he needs their help. Ayako agrees to host their "show of power", a tri-village tournament between Kiri, Suna, and Konoha's chuunin and jounin.
While relations between the competitors go well enough, those between the kages aren't nearly as kosher. Prior to the final match between the Mist village's Jun-Sai and the Sand village's Karasu Ketsueki, a Mist shinobi attempts assassination on Kokoro while shouting to the Mizukage's glory. The attack was easily thwarted by the puppeteer kage, but hostile suspicions turned to the Mizukage, Kazuya Shisui. A brawl broke out between him and Kokoro, taking half the stadium with it before Aya stopped both of them. News came from Suna messengers that the Elder Council had been killed, and the attack seemed to have been by Kiri's shinobi; Kazuya was apprehended on charges of attempted political assassination.Aya leaves Kokoro to recover from the battle and goes to set up for the interrogation that will follow; at the edge of the village where the battle ended, Kokoro meets with a man identifying himself as Isamu Kazuke, the Hokage's allegedly-deceased twin brother. It was he and his partner Murasaki Nashi that had killed the Elder Council under the banner of some unknown organization that was working with Kokoro to meet some ends...
